HHCD Empowers

Building a Better Chicago

In 2014, HHCD was awarded a five-year contract with the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) to provide comprehensive case management, employment services, youth empowerment services, housing stability, and clinical and wellness programs to CHA residents in the Near North community (former Cabrini neighborhood).

The FamilyWorks program provides targeted services to residents living within the area’s traditional family housing, scattered sites, and mixed-income developments, as well as to families who have been temporarily relocated with a Housing Choice Voucher who retain a right of return. Based on their individual needs, the services help residents remain lease compliant by meeting site-specific criteria. HHCD provides adult and youth employment, academic and job training, summer youth camps, job placement assistance, as well as assessments, referrals and case management for a full range of needs.

FamilyWorks emphasizes programming for 16-24 year old youth including participation in the Summer Youth Employment Program, the Learn and Earn Mentoring Program, and Storycatchers Theatre; school re-engagement; ACT, SAT and COMPASS test prep for college entrance; and an 8-week college exploration program. Elementary school-aged children participate in tutoring, financial literacy training, Girl Scouts, Girls on the Run, and more.

Family programs include museum visits and summer fun fests and concerts in the park. FamilyWorks provides employment and educational services for 18-54 year old adults to assist them achieve or maintain self-sufficiency and to remain lease compliant based on the criteria of their housing community.
